Climeaction Case Studies

Food Manufacturer

Overview

A long-established Food manufacturer (bakery) partnered with Climeaction to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across its operations through a strategic CAaaS (Carbon Action as a Service) program.

O’Keefe’s: Turning Energy Insight into Lasting Impact

This case study video showcases how Climeaction partnered with O’Keefe’s to transform their operations through the FAST program.

By combining on-site audits, data-driven analysis, and practical implementation support, the project identified major energy-saving opportunities and delivered measurable carbon reductions. The film highlights O’Keefe’s journey from assessment to action, showing how strategic collaboration and a structured decarbonisation plan can cut costs, reduce emissions, and future-proof industrial performance.

The Challenge

This bakery produces bread rolls, bread pans, and all variations of products to suit customer requirements. There is also a large frozen warehouse facility to store baked goods as well as other products that require warehousing. The whole process is highly energy intensive, with Significant Thermal Energy Users including:

  • Large Ovens for proofing and baking products,
  • Large refrigeration system for warehouse,
  • HVAC systems
  • General plant heating

While the site invested in energy management metering there was no clear structure on how to achieve site energy reduction targets and it struggled to identify the next major cost and carbon reduction opportunities.

The Challenge

The Solutions

Climeaction delivered its FAST program, followed by the implementation of CAaaS, focusing first on refrigeration optimisation in a staged approach:

  1. Reduce Energy Demands
    • Investigated and improved chiller setpoints to avoid over-cooling areas and reduce electricity demand.
    • Focused on reducing natural gas demand in cold storage warehouse loading bay dehumidification units by challenging setpoints and installation of separation technologies between the loading bay and cold storage warehouse.
  2. Capture Waste Heat from Refrigeration
    • Site installed a LPHW heat pump taking the refrigeration return and supplying to the existing LPHW & DHW systems.
    • Update of energy management system to improve on data processing,
    • Investigation into compressed air reductions, Solar PPAs, district heating systems and more.
  3. Other Utilities Upgrades
    • Achieved over 4.3 GWh of total energy reductions, measure and verified.
    • Equates to over €250k in EEOS rebates alone.
