Large Power Generation Facility

Overview

One of the largest electricity production facilities in Ireland engaged Climeaction to support continued regulatory compliance as well as the next phase of their decarbonisation strategy across their Ireland campus of sites.

The Challenge

The client’s operation in Ireland produces approximately 20% of the total electricity in the energy grid through natural gas combustion and steam to electrical generators, with an annual energy consumption exceeding 5,220 GWh.

This client is a major part of the critical infrastructure of Ireland and without it there would be huge disruptions to the national electricity grid, affecting millions of people. There is a significant house load of nearly 12 MW which covers all auxiliary equipment required to operation the two generators onsite. The challenge with this site is in the development of opportunities that will not affect the site operation nor provide any potential future risks going forward.

The Challenge

The Solutions

Climeaction conducted an SI426 energy audit in 2022, integrating data across all major energy systems to identify significant users, load profiles, and reduction pathways. The audit uncovered potential annual cost savings of nearly €8 million, equating to 136 GWh in energy savings.

  • CAaaS Implementation: An on-site energy engineer was embedded weekly under Climeaction’s Climate Action as a Service model to develop, deliver, and track savings.

  • M&V and EEOS Rebates: Savings were measured and verified by a Climeaction Certified Measurement & Verification Professional, unlocking additional rebates through the Energy Efficiency Obligation Scheme (EEOS).

  • Energy Projects Delivered:
  • Diesel Heater Shutdown: Reduced unnecessary heating of backup diesel fuel tanks, limiting operation to peak winter demand.
  • Storage Heaters: Eliminated wasted energy from non-essential electric storage heaters.

  • Site Energy Programme: Comprehensive controller upgrades to improve turbine response times during startup and shutdown, with detailed procedural improvements such as:
  • Optimised auxiliary steam scheduling for turbine pre-warming
  • Reduced bypass valve open duration through earlier HRSG ramp control
  • Adjusted loading rates post-synchronisation to reduce part-load inefficiencies
  • Enhanced coordination between gas and steam turbine operators
